Pet sitting in Brno
A business trip away from Brno need not turn your dog's days upside down. Someone from your part of town can take it in, so it can keep its familiar streets, its walks at the usual hour and perhaps the dog meadow in Lužánky park. Their reward is Care Points rather than money, collected earlier when you looked after another owner's pet yourself.

Handy local knowledge for keeping a pet happy here.
Taking your dog on Brno transport under IDS JMK rules
The trams, trolleybuses and buses of the city transport company, Dopravní podnik města Brna, are part of IDS JMK, the integrated transport system of the South Moravian Region, so its conditions of carriage cover your dog. Without a carrier, the dog keeps its muzzle on and you hold it on a short leash until you get off. Seats are off limits, and it must not be placed next to a pram, a wheelchair or another passenger's luggage. A dog without a carrier needs its own reduced ticket, but if you hold a valid season ticket for two days or more, it rides free in Brno's zones 100 and 101. A small dog carried in a shut box with a leakproof bottom, no larger than 20 x 30 x 50 cm, also travels free.
Where your dog can run free
Under the city's ordinance No. 9/2017 on the movement of dogs, your dog belongs on a leash in any public space, and once you let it off the leash it must wear a muzzle. Leash and muzzle can both come off only on the areas listed in the ordinance's annex and marked on site with a sign, and even there you have to keep the dog under constant supervision. In the centre these include the dog meadow in Lužánky park and two dog runs in the park around Špilberk castle. Lužánky also has spots where dogs are not allowed at all, such as the Ponávka stream and the lagoon with its banks, the children's playgrounds and some flower beds.
The dog fee goes to your district
You report your dog and pay the dog fee to the office of the city district (městská část) where you have your registered address, not to City Hall. There are 29 districts and the rates differ between them, because each district's council proposes its own. Report a dog older than three months within 15 days and pay the annual fee by 31 March. If the dog joins you after that date, the fee is due by the 15th of the following month. After moving to another district you pay the new one from the next month. A dog adopted from a shelter is exempt for its first year with you, though you still have to report it.

Pet sitting in Brno: common questions
Do dogs have to wear a muzzle on Brno trams?
Yes, unless the dog travels in a closed carrier. Trams, trolleybuses and buses follow the same rule: the dog stays muzzled and on a short leash throughout the ride. Outside a carrier, only guide and assistance dogs may travel without a muzzle. You can board with a dog only with the driver's consent, and the driver may refuse a dog that is noisy, dirty, ill or unmanageable.
Where in Brno can my dog run without a leash or muzzle?
Only on the areas that the annex to ordinance No. 9/2017 lists district by district, each marked on site with a sign. Most districts have at least one, Královo Pole and Bystrc have the most, while Jundrov, Kníničky, Slatina, Ořešín and Útěchov have none. Elsewhere in public space, keep your dog on a leash, and if you let it off, put a muzzle on it.
