Local guide

A pet owner's guide to České Budějovice

Handy local knowledge for keeping a pet happy here.

Your dog aboard České Budějovice trolleybuses and buses

City transport is run by Dopravní podnik města České Budějovice, and under its conditions of carriage a dog rides free on trolleybuses and buses, so you only pay your own fare. A dog is the only animal allowed aboard without a carrier, and only with the driver's knowledge. It must wear a safe muzzle, stay on a short leash and keep off the seats. One dog per vehicle is the rule, or several if they all travel with one passenger. The driver may let further passengers with dogs aboard when conditions on board allow, and can turn away a dog without a carrier when the vehicle is full or for safety reasons. You answer for how the dog behaves and for any mess or damage it causes.

Where the leash is required

Dogs in public spaces are covered by city ordinance No. 4/2025, in force since 5 March 2025. A leash is compulsory in the historic centre, on the island of Sokolský ostrov and in the other areas listed in its annex, as well as on designated shared foot and cycle paths and on the children's playgrounds it names. There the dog walks on the leash at your side, so that it cannot touch people or other animals as you pass them. Elsewhere in public space a dog may run free, but only under your constant supervision and direct control. The leash rule does not apply in dog parks that their operator has set aside for dogs to run free, nor to guide and assistance dogs. Droppings must be picked up straight away.

Registering a dog and paying the dog fee

The dog fee is administered by Magistrát města České Budějovice, the city hall, under ordinance No. 7/2023. Owners registered in the city pay it for every dog over three months old. You report the dog within 15 days of it turning three months old or of taking on an older dog, even if you are exempt. The fee is due by 31 March and can be paid through the city's payment portal, by bank transfer or at the city hall cash desk. Adopt a dog from a shelter set up by the city and you are exempt that year and the next two, provided you report it in time. Dogs must be chipped by three months of age, and a dog you already have goes into the Centrální evidence psů, the national dog register, through your vet at its next rabies jab at the latest.

Pet sitting in České Budějovice: common questions

Are a muzzle and a short leash required on České Budějovice trolleybuses?

Yes, unless the dog travels in a carrier. The transport company's conditions say a dog riding outside a carrier must have a safe muzzle on and be kept on a short leash. Guide and assistance dogs need no muzzle, and the operator may never refuse to carry them. An animal in a carrier with a leakproof bottom travels on the same terms as luggage, and since only dogs may board without one, a cat always needs a carrier.

Where can a dog stretch its legs off the leash in České Budějovice?

Anywhere the city ordinance does not ask for a leash, and in dog parks, as long as the dog stays under your constant supervision. Stromovka, the largest park in the city and a few minutes' walk from the centre, is popular with dog owners. It is not one of the ordinance's leash areas, so a dog that comes back when called can stretch its legs there. The leash still applies on the children's playgrounds in the park and on the shared foot and cycle paths the ordinance lists.
