Pet sitting in Holešovice

Holešovice sits in a bend of the Vltava, a Prague 7 district of old industrial halls, galleries and water on two sides. Stromovka, the largest park in central Prague, starts a few minutes from most streets here, which is why so many dog owners end up in this corner of the city. Leave your pet with a neighbour while you travel and the stay is settled in Care Points, never in money.

Local guide

A pet owner's guide to Holešovice

Handy local knowledge for keeping a pet happy here.

Stromovka on the doorstep

Stromovka, properly the Královská obora, covers more than 90 hectares of floodplain meadow and wooded slope beside the river. It technically belongs to the Bubeneč cadastral area rather than Holešovice, though nobody living here makes that distinction. A Prague ordinance dating from 2001 keeps dogs on the leash in public greenery, and a dog may only come off the leash on the patches a park marks with a pictogram. Stromovka's dog meadow is one of the largest such spaces in the city and it is open, with no fence, so it suits a dog whose recall you trust. Flower beds, the flowering meadows and children's playgrounds are closed to dogs, and the city has written publicly about the damage loose dogs do to the park's wildlife and planting, so the rule is taken seriously here.

The river, Štvanice and the old port

The riverbank is flat and runs a long way, which makes Holešovice kind walking for an older dog. Since July 2023 the Štvanice footbridge, roughly 300 metres of pale concrete that locals call HolKa, has crossed from Holešovice over Štvanice island to Karlín, open to people on foot and on bikes only. It turned the island into an ordinary evening loop instead of a detour. On the site of the old Holešovice port around Jankovcova street, new apartment and office blocks have been going up for years. There is still little green among them, so people from the new buildings walk in the same direction as everyone else, towards Stromovka or down to the water.

Getting around, and the paperwork

Metro line C stops at Vltavská and Nádraží Holešovice, and trams run through Strossmayerovo náměstí and along Dukelských hrdinů. Within Prague your own valid PID ticket covers up to two dogs with nothing extra to pay, one dog on PID trains. Beyond the Prague zones the dog needs a ticket of its own, 25 CZK on paper or 23 CZK in the app. Out of a carrier a dog must be on a short leash and wearing a muzzle, which people here fit at the stop rather than on board. In a fully closed carrier with a solid base, up to 25 x 45 x 70 cm, the dog counts as luggage and the muzzle rule does not apply. Dogs are not allowed on the seats. If you have just moved here, there is also the dog tax: register the dog with the Prague 7 town hall within fifteen days, then pay 1,500 CZK a year for a dog kept in a flat, 600 CZK in a family house, or 200 CZK if the holder is over 65.

Pet sitting in Holešovice: common questions

What does dog care cost in this part of Prague?

As a rough range, a night in a Prague dog hotel runs somewhere between 400 and 900 CZK depending on the size of the dog and the place, and a professional sitter for a full day usually falls between 400 and 800 CZK. That is what commercial care costs, not what Petswap costs. On Petswap no money changes hands at all. Stays are settled in Care Points, which you earn by looking after someone else's pet, and points never convert back into cash.

Can I take my dog on the metro or tram from here?

Yes. Inside Prague your own valid ticket covers up to two dogs with nothing more to pay, one dog on PID trains. Out of a carrier the dog needs a short leash and a muzzle, so fit the muzzle before you board. A small dog in a fully closed carrier of up to 25 x 45 x 70 cm travels as luggage and needs no muzzle at all. Either way, the dog stays off the seats.
