Handy local knowledge for keeping a pet happy here.

Dogs and cats on Liberec trams and buses

Liberec's city trams and buses are run by Dopravní podnik měst Liberce a Jablonce nad Nisou (DPMLJ), the Liberec and Jablonec transport company, as part of IDOL, the integrated transport system of the Liberec Region. Under the IDOL tariff animals travel free in the Liberec zone, so your dog needs no ticket of its own. A cat or other small pet may only come aboard in an easily portable, fully closed carrier with a leakproof bottom. A dog without a carrier stays on the leash and keeps its muzzle on for the whole ride. Neither pets nor carriers go on the seats. Prams with a child and passengers in wheelchairs board ahead of a dog. On some services the operator may restrict animals, including how many leashed dogs ride at once.

Leash rules and free-running areas

Since 1 January 2024 dogs in Liberec have been covered by city ordinance No. 12/2023, which replaced the rules from 2009. On public land a dog must be kept under control on a leash, and you may only let it loose in the areas listed in the ordinance's annex. There are more than thirty of them across the city, in neighbourhoods such as Ruprechtice, Rochlice, Starý Harcov and Vesec. Children's playgrounds and sports grounds are closed to dogs altogether, leash or not. The annex defines each area by plot numbers, so a dog may run free only on those plots, not everywhere around them.

The registration tag and the dog fee

In Liberec the dog fee is handled by the Magistrát města Liberec, the city hall, while residents of Vratislavice nad Nisou go to their own district office, the Úřad městského obvodu. A dog older than six months must be reported within 15 days of joining you, and a puppy by the day it turns six months. Exempt owners report too, such as someone who took a dog from a shelter and pays nothing for the first year. The fee is due by 31 March, or, if the obligation starts in March or later, a proportional share is due by the end of the following month. You then receive a tag marked Město Liberec with the dog's number. By law a dog must also be microchipped, a puppy by three months of age, with the chip number in its vaccination record.

Pet sitting in Liberec: common questions

Should my dog be muzzled on Liberec trams and buses?

Yes, whenever it is outside a closed carrier. The conditions of carriage for Liberec's city lines require a dog without a carrier to keep its muzzle on for the whole ride and stay on the leash. The driver or a ticket inspector can refuse to take a dog that has neither a carrier nor a muzzle. Within the Liberec zone the dog itself rides free, so your own valid ticket is all you need.

Which parts of Liberec allow a dog off the leash?

Only in the areas listed in the annex to ordinance No. 12/2023. They include the area by the Harcov reservoir (Harcovská přehrada) and the area by the Vesec pond (Vesecký rybník). The full list with plot numbers is published in the official collection of local ordinances at sbirkapp.gov.cz, and lists based on the old 2009 ordinance no longer apply. Everywhere else on public land your dog stays on the leash.
