Pet sitting in Olomouc

A run of long shifts would leave your dog waiting alone at home from morning to night. In Olomouc someone within walking distance can look after it for those days. In quieter weeks you can mind other people's pets and gain Care Points, then in the busy ones use them to say thank you for the help.

Handy local knowledge for keeping a pet happy here.

What to expect with a dog on trams and buses in Olomouc

Trams and buses in Olomouc are run by Dopravní podnik města Olomouce (DPMO) under the transport conditions of IDSOK, the regional integrated system. Without a carrier only one dog may ride in a vehicle, or two if they belong to the same owner. The dog wears a secure muzzle for the whole ride, stays on a short leash and keeps off the seats, and pictograms by the doors show where to board with it. A dog without a carrier needs its own fare, except a blind passenger's guide dog, and an IDSOK network ticket (síťová jízdenka) already covers one dog. A small pet shut in a carrier with a leakproof base, no bigger than 30 x 40 x 60 cm, rides free as hand luggage.

Leash or muzzle, your choice

Olomouc's ordinance No. 6/2020 sets the rules for dogs in public spaces. You pick one of two options: the dog walks on a leash and needs no muzzle, or it wears a muzzle and may go without a leash. A dog with neither is not allowed in any public space. In Čechovy sady, Smetanovy sady and Bezručovy sady, in park Pod Dómem, on marked cycle paths and throughout the protected historic centre (městská památková rezervace), the leash is compulsory. Children's playgrounds, sports grounds and sandpits are off limits to dogs. Keep your dog under control at all times and clean up after it straight away.

The dog fee and the microchip

The dog fee in Olomouc is handled by the city hall, Magistrát města Olomouce, through the local fees office of its economic department at Palackého 14. Report your dog within 15 days of it turning three months old, or of taking on an older dog, even if you qualify for an exemption. You can file in person or through a data box (datová schránka), and the fee is due by 31 May each year. Every dog must have a microchip, or its rabies vaccination does not count. Getting the dog into the dog register is your duty, and a vet makes the entry. A dog you already own must be entered at its next rabies shot at the latest.

Pet sitting in Olomouc: common questions

Will my dog need a muzzle on an Olomouc tram or bus?

Yes, unless it rides in a closed carrier. The IDSOK conditions, which also apply on DPMO vehicles, require a secure muzzle for the entire ride, and only a blind passenger's guide dog is exempt. When the vehicle is full, the driver or another authorised member of staff may turn away a dog without a carrier, and the same goes for a dog that is aggressive, out of control or dirty.

Can I register my dog or cat with the Olomouc city police?

Yes. Městská policie Olomouc keeps a database of animals, and its officers carry electronic readers that trace the owner of a runaway dog within moments. You can add your dog once its fee is paid, giving the details needed to identify it. Since 2025 the database also takes cats, parrots and other pets that carry a chip, a tag or another marking. For those, bring the papers that identify the animal to the city police at Kateřinská 23.
