Dogs on city transport in Hradec Králové

City transport is run by Dopravní podnik města Hradce Králové (DPmHK). Under its conditions of carriage a dog is the only animal allowed to travel outside a carrier, and only with the driver's knowledge, so let the driver know before you board. The dog must wear a secure muzzle, be held on a short leash from boarding to getting off, and keep off the seats. At busy times the driver may refuse a dog without a carrier. You answer for its behaviour, and a dog that bothers other passengers can be put off. A cat or other small pet travels in a closed carrier with a leakproof bottom, and the carrier rides free. Under DPmHK's tariff a dog rides free as well.

Free running by the Orlice and places that require a muzzle

Since January 2024 the city's dog ordinance has required a leash in public spaces. A dog may run free only on areas marked with a sign, over twenty of them, including the Orlice embankment between the Malšovický and Orlický bridges and the stretch along Brněnská street and the dyke by Flošna. Even there keep it under constant supervision. Leash and muzzle together apply on Riegrovo náměstí and around the Terminál hromadné dopravy on Nádražní street, at city transport stops, within 50 metres of primary schools and nurseries, and at outdoor gatherings and events. A tied-up dog must always be muzzled. Dogs are banned from Jiráskovy sady and from playgrounds with a no-dogs sign, as well as from flower beds, monuments and fountains.

Registering your dog at the Magistrát

If your permanent address is in the city, you pay the dog fee to the Magistrát, the city hall. A dog older than three months has to be reported there within 15 days of the fee duty starting, and owners who are exempt must report their dog too. The fee is due by 25 April each year, and the city hall gives you a tag with the city's name and the dog's registration number. A dog adopted from a shelter in the city is exempt for one year. Every dog also needs a microchip and an entry in the national register, the Centrální evidence psů, made by a vet before the dog goes to a new owner, or for older dogs at the next rabies shot at the latest.

Pet sitting in Hradec Králové: common questions

When must a dog wear a muzzle on Hradec Králové transport?

Whenever it travels outside a closed carrier. DPmHK's conditions ask for a secure muzzle and a short leash throughout the journey, and only a guide dog for a blind person is exempt from the muzzle. A dog accompanying a holder of the ZTP/P disability card cannot be refused. Put the muzzle on while you wait at the stop, because the city ordinance already requires it there, together with the leash.

Can a dog run free in Hradec Králové outside the marked areas?

No, only on the free-running areas set out in attachment 1 of city ordinance no. 12/2023, each marked on site with a sign. The list with maps is in the official collection of local regulations, and several of the areas lie along the Orlice. Everywhere else the dog stays on a leash, and even on a free-running area you must keep it in sight and under control.
